At the heart of the organization’s story is a legacy rooted in care, education, and community. The original program logo represents Miss Weary’s Manners for the Modern Child, an initiative founded by Fay Ragsdell.
In 2000, Fay Ragsdell, alongside her sisters, envisioned a program that would instill confidence, etiquette, and social grace in young children within their family and community. What began as a shared idea soon became a reality, with classes held at a neighborhood park district on the South Side of Chicago. These gatherings became a space where children not only learned manners, but also built character and pride in themselves.
Fay was known for her generous spirit and unwavering commitment to young people. A passionate advocate for education, she consistently encouraged those around her to pursue learning at every stage of life. Miss Weary’s Manners for the Modern Child—a name inspired by her maiden name—became a reflection of her values and a source of immense pride. Carrying forward her teachings and values, her grandchildren took part in the program during their summer visits to Chicago.
Following Fay’s passing in 2012, her daughter, Wendy Williams, RN, MS, MPH, sought a meaningful way to preserve and extend her mother’s vision. Drawing from her own experience as a nurse and community advocate, she continued the mission of empowering others through education. This commitment led to the founding of the Miss Weary Foundation.
